The oldest settlement in the upper Erzgebirge is the mining town of Schlettau. Schlettau was a staging post on the old salt route which led from Halle to Prague. Prospectors dug for silver and tin in the old mines. The town's pride and glory is its castle, which is over 800 years old and has a magnificent Knights' Hall, exhibition workshops and a delightful park. In the Grüner Zweig samt Gnade Gottes Stolln mine there are workings, winzes and pump shafts. There are some wonderful examples of the sintering of iron and magnesium, and formations of gypsum crystals.
Freiberg Christmas Market Get into the festive mood and experience true Erzgebirge traditions and mining customs at the authentic Freiberger Christmarkt.
